About BookToMovies
Stories move — from page to screen. We document every adaptation, past, present, and future.
Our Mission
BookToMovies.com is the definitive global archive of every movie adapted from a book. But we are more than a catalog — we are the world's live adaptation demand engine. We exist because the relationship between literature and cinema is one of the most important creative partnerships in modern storytelling, and yet no single resource had ever mapped it comprehensively.
For decades, readers have wondered whether their favorite novels ever made it to the screen, and moviegoers have left theaters curious about the books behind the stories they love. BookToMovies bridges that gap with a meticulously curated, community-powered database that connects every adaptation to its source material. We document what exists, track what is coming, and amplify the voices of readers who believe their favorite books deserve a cinematic life.
Our vision is a world where no great story goes undiscovered. Whether a novel was adapted in 1935 or is currently in post-production, whether it was a Hollywood blockbuster or an independent international film, BookToMovies captures the full scope of literary adaptation. We are building the most comprehensive, transparent, and community-driven adaptation resource ever created — and we are just getting started.
What We Do
BookToMovies serves as:
- The Global Book-to-Film Adaptation Archive — cataloging novels, memoirs, comics, manga, religious texts, short stories, and biographical works adapted for screen
- A Structured Adaptation Comparison Engine — with fidelity ratings, genre filters, and year-by-year tracking
- A Reverse Discovery Search Tool — search by movie to find the book, or by book to find the film
- The Public Adaptation Request Board — where fans vote on which books should be adapted next
- A Crowdsourced "Make This a Movie" Index — live-ranked demand signals for the entertainment industry
- A Micro-Screenplay Concept Engine — fan-created adaptation outlines for popular requested books
Our Methodology
Every entry in the BookToMovies archive meets rigorous editorial standards. Our process ensures accuracy, transparency, and consistency across every adaptation record.
Adaptation Verification
Every adaptation is verified through at least two independent sources: official film databases (IMDb, TMDB), studio press releases, published credits, and reputable entertainment journalism. We never list an adaptation based on rumors or unverified claims. Each entry undergoes editorial review before publication.
Fidelity Scoring
Our fidelity ratings (1-5) measure how closely a film follows its source material across four dimensions: plot structure, character portrayal, thematic integrity, and tonal accuracy. Scores are set by our editorial team and refined through community feedback. A 5/5 indicates near-perfect faithfulness; a 1/5 signals a loose or reimagined adaptation.
Vote Counting
Community votes on the Request Board are deduplicated and verified to ensure integrity. Each user receives one vote per book. Vote totals are recalculated in real time and reflected on the Rankings page. We employ rate-limiting and anomaly detection to prevent manipulation, ensuring that rankings genuinely reflect community demand.
Development Status Tracking
We track six distinct development stages: Optioned, In Development, Pre-Production, Filming, Post-Production, and Released. Status updates are sourced exclusively from verified entertainment outlets (Deadline, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter) and official studio announcements. Every status change includes a source citation and timestamp.
Data Integrity & Legal Standards
BookToMovies is committed to maintaining the highest standards of editorial integrity. Our three-pillar approach to data quality ensures that every piece of information on the site is accurate, sourced, and current.
Editorial Standards
Every entry is written and reviewed by our editorial team before publication. We maintain a style guide that ensures consistency across all adaptation records, including standardized formatting for titles, dates, credits, and descriptions. Entries are fact-checked against primary sources, and any unverified claims are clearly labeled as unconfirmed. We never publish rumors as facts, and all speculative content is flagged with appropriate disclaimers.
Source Verification
We rely on a tiered source hierarchy. Primary sources include official studio announcements, press releases, and verified credits. Secondary sources include reputable entertainment publications such as Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter. Community-submitted information is treated as tertiary and must be independently verified before publication. All development status updates include source citations so users can verify claims themselves.
Community Moderation
Community submissions and votes are moderated to maintain quality and prevent abuse. Book submissions are reviewed within 48 hours by our editorial team. Votes are deduplicated and monitored for irregular patterns. Community members can flag inaccurate information through our reporting system, and corrections are prioritized in our editorial queue. We believe transparency builds trust — every entry shows its last-updated date and revision history.
Our Voice
BookToMovies speaks with the authority of a film historian, the precision of a literary analyst, and the structure of an industry tracker. We are:
- Authoritative and transparent
- Exciting but never speculative without disclosure
- Film-literate and literature-respectful
- Data-driven in every ranking and recommendation

We include any film or television production that is based on, adapted from, or inspired by a published written work — including novels, short stories, memoirs, biographies, comics, manga, plays, and religious texts.
